FRENCH MARITIME PINE BARK - PYCNOGENOL®

Pycnogenol® is the extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, which grows in Les Landes natural and unspoiled forest, in south-west France. Pycnogenol® is produced by a validated manufacturing process following Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).

Over 40 years of research and more than 450 scientific articles and clinical trials have confirmed Pycnogenol®’s safety, absence of toxicity, and clinical efficacy. In today’s marketplace, Pycnogenol® is one of the best researched natural products.

Scientific evidence on its antioxidant capacity and protective action on the vascular system have been published in the most renowned scientific journals.

    Ginger

Ginger or Zingiber officinale is a widely known herbaceous plant with irregular shaped roots (rhizomes) and used as a flavoring agent or spice in food and a herbal traditional medicine for centuries in China and India (Ayurveda). Ginger is known to have anti-platelet aggregation properties and fibrinolytic activity and because thinner blood is easier for your heart to pump, it helps improve the circulation of blood within your veins.

HOW DOES LONG-HAUL CIRCULATION SUPPORTS HEALTHY VASCULAR CIRCULATION?

During air or car travel, prolonged periods of inactivity in tight spaces can affect the blood flow throughout the body. Poor blood circulation in the legs and ankles results in the blood pooling in the leg veins, which causes swelling (edema), stiffness, cramping and discomfort. In flights, the low oxygen, humidity, and cabin pressure have a dehydrating effect that concentrate the blood. The build-up of plaques (artherosclerosis) composed of fat, cholesterol, calcium and other substances in the arteries increases the risk of blood clot formation or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Risk factors that contribute to sticky blood platelets include stress, high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking.

The rationale for the development of the Long-Haul Circulation (Zinopin® blend) was considered, a combination of pine bark and ginger extracts. Pine bark extract is an antioxidant with effective anti-edema and anti-inflammatory agents, reducing capillary permeability. It has an anti-thrombotic effect by inhibiting platelet reactivity. Pine bark extract reduces platelet activity in a manner similar to aspirin, but does not cause bleeding. The reduction in capillary permeability has been shown to reduce oedema, and in clinical studies, shown to have beneficial effects on the legs and ankles. Ginger is known to have anti-platelet and fibrinolytic activity, in addition to its effect on motion sickness. It therefore follows that a combination of these two ingredients is likely to prove effective. The combined interaction of pine bark and ginger can be clearly explained in the matrix developed by Dr. Om Gulati and Dr. John Scurr, which forms part of the scientific rationale for Zinopin®.1

One clinical study conducted by Dr. John Scurr, specifically investigated the protective effects of Long-Haul Circulation (Zinopin® blend) during prolonged periods of traveling, sometimes referred to as 'economy class syndrome'. The open trial included 167 healthy participants on two long-haul flights each within three weeks. Passengers were supplemented with Long-Haul Circulation (Zinopin® blend) one capsule a day prior to departure, two capsules an hour before take-off and one capsule each of the following two consecutive days after arrival. The results to this open trial showed that Long-Haul Circulation (Zinopin®blend) helps protect against thrombotic events, counteracts swelling of the legs and ankles (75.9% symptom-free, remaining participants noted symptom improvements) and helps manage problems of motion sickness (92.8% no sign) in passengers traveling long-haul.2

What is French Maritime Pine Bark?

Pine bark bioflavonoids were used by the Native Americans in a tea brewed from the bark of pine trees growing along the Atlantic.

Pine Bark

Traditional therapeutic use

For centuries, herbalists have recommended plant extracts – from barks, roots, leaves – to treat people’s illnesses. Today, nutritionists and doctors recommend diets rich in fruits and vegetables to prevent the same diseases. The scientific reason for the success of these diets has recently become apparent. Fruits, vegetables and herbs contain bioflavonoids the type of polyphenolic antioxidants also found in French maritime pine bark. While all these bioflavonoids are found in a broad range of fruits, vegetables and teas, French maritime pine bark extracts provide an optimal combination of polyphenols.

Current use

French maritime pine bark extract interesting for its antioxidant properties, the most recognized benefit lies in its ability to thin the blood. Swollen ankles and heavy legs are the result of poor venous return to the heart because the valves responsible for expelling blood upwards are deficient. By its capacity to reinforce capillary walls (the finest blood vessels of the body), the bark of the French maritime pine showed its effectiveness to reduce the oedema and the micro-hemorrhages in the legs.

The French explorer Jacques Cartier was introduced to the tea when Native Americans saved most of his crew from death by scurvy during the winter of 1534. More than 400 years later universities began studies on flavonoids. Their search for bioactive flavonoids eventually led them to the bark of the French maritime pine where they found a rich source of a distinct group of highly bioavailable and bioactive flavonoids. Because the bark is grown layer by layer over a period of more than 30 years, there are neither seasonal nor annual variations in the composition of its ingredients, in contrast to other herbal extracts. All constituents of French maritime pine bark are potent scavengers of free radicals.
